報告要旨

"Gender gaps remain pervasive in Japan across education, work, and family. In this talk, I present two ongoing studies that examine how social and workplace environments contribute to these disparities. The first study examines pluralistic ignorance surrounding men's paternity leave. Using a large-scale survey experiment, we show that workers substantially underestimate their coworkers' support for men taking parental leave and examine whether correcting these misperceptions affects beliefs and advice about leave-taking. The second study uses personnel data from a large Japanese firm to investigate gender differences in the desire for promotion and how workplace environments shape women's career aspirations. Finally, I introduce SHAPE (Survey on High-schoolers' Attitudes, Pathways, and Expectations), a new large-scale research project involving high school students, parents, and teachers across Japan, which investigates how gender differences in educational choices emerge. Together, these projects seek to understand how social environments shape gender gaps at different stages of life and to identify potential pathways toward reducing gender inequality in Japan."
