報告要旨
In many social contexts, an alternative generates value only if enough parties commit to it. Examples of this situation abound. A classic example is technology adoption with network externalities, where a technology becomes profitable only once a critical mass of firms adopt it. In this type of situation, someone must take the initiative, hoping that others will follow. But when is such an initial move credible enough to persuade others to get on board? Does this process reliably lead to the "right" choice in the long run? If not, what factors may push a group of agents into an unfavorable choice? This paper develops a framework to address these questions and derive welfare and policy implications for dynamic consensus formation. Our framework can also be applied to coalition formation in politics.
